Conservative Future
Michael was knighted by the Queen in 2001 for Services to Parliament and is currently Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons and Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means.

"Being a Deputy Speaker," he says, "is a great honour for for me and one which I hope my consituency shares. Trying to remember the names of 659 MP's, many of whom were new, on my first day was somewhat daunting but now it is entralling to be in charge of the Chamber of the House of Commons. When the House is packed for major debates it is challenging to be in the Speakers Chair. It is also extremely useful to sit in the Chair every day as legislation passes through the House as this enables me to keep my finger on the pulse of all that is happening."
